According to current regulations, oxidizing agents are considered dangerous goods if substances can cause or contribute to ignition, generally by providing oxygen as a result of a redox chemical reaction. Organic peroxides are substances that can be considered as derivatives of hydrogen peroxide where one or both hydrogen atoms of the chemical structure have been replaced by organic radicals.
Oxidizing agents are not necessarily combustible per se, but can give oxygen and thereby cause or contribute to ignition of other materials. Organic peroxides are thermally unstable and can breathe heat while undergoing exothermic autocatalytic degradation. In addition, organic peroxides can cause explosive decomposition, burn quickly, be susceptible to shock or friction, react dangerously with other substances or cause eye damage.
